This Country Used to Celebrate Free Speech. Now It Arrests It.
This country used to pride itself on being a bastion of liberty, free speech and fair debate. The ability to have a pint, speak your mind, and go home without worrying about a knock on the door…well, not anymore.
We are witnessing a full blown assault on freedom of expression in modern Britain. And it’s being carried out not by fringe radicals, but by the very institutions meant to protect us.
Take 41 year old mother, Lucy Connolly, a woman sentenced to prison, yes, prison, for words, words that she simply wrote online. Stupid and seriously misjudged words, but worthy of prison? .. no.
Meanwhile, career criminals run free. Muggers and machete carriers get slaps on the wrist, suspended sentences for most. Knife crime has exploded, but if you say something impolite, you’re the villain.
And it’s not just the courts, look at what happened to Allison Pearson, a respected journalist, love her or hate her, she had the police knock on her door over something she tweeted. Let that sink in…Police, knocking at your house because some online mob didn’t like your opinion. Stalin would be proud.
Then there’s the former police officer, a man who once upheld the law, arrested for a social media post…not threatening, not illegal…just seemingly unpopular. What message does that send? That your job, your service, your loyalty mean nothing once you step out of line and think for yourself.
We now live in a country where comedians have to self censor and where writers hold back. Ordinary people delete tweets in case someone gets offended ten years later.
Is this the Britain we want?
And I’ll be honest, i’m shocked that I haven’t been hauled in myself yet, god knows I’ve said plenty that a woke idiot could twist into “hate” just because they’ve never had a proper argument in their life. If offence is now a crime, then prison’s going to need many more wings.
The most terrifying part is this, it isn’t coming from the fringe, it is being pushed by our own institutions.. the police, the CPS and Politicians who’d rather pander to Twitter mobs, than protect actual liberties. Every time someone’s arrested for a tweet or investigated for a Facebook comment, a chill runs through the rest of us… or is that the point??! It’s not about justice… it’s about control.
And now Labour wants to go one step further. Hidden deep inside their so called Employment Bill, is a clause that could all but outlaw “banter” in the workplace. Sounds trivial until you realise that pubs and football grounds fall under this. That means landlords like me could face action over a joke, a bit of back and forth, the very essence of pub culture… the banter that’s held this country together in hard times. Gone…turned into a sackable offence, or worse, a legal matter.
We’ve swapped debate for denunciation, disagreement for censorship. The British way of sorting things with banter, argument and wit is dying. It’s being strangled by the authoritarian grip of cancel culture, bad legislation and a generation far too fragile to handle views that they dislike.
What happened to sticks and stones? Now it’s sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will get you ten months in prison.
Enough is enough. We need to reclaim our freedom to speak freely, to joke, to offend and to disagree, because once you lose that, you lose everything.
Say something now, or one day you’ll wonder why nobody says anything at all.

Its always the left that make the complaints, yet they think its ok that our FS tweeted and said on TV that members of the ERG and Brexit voters were racists etc, an Health secretary that threatened violence to a journalist (who he named) and Bill Rammell calling you and Reform far right goes unchallenged. Its all about shutting down debate, it has to be stopped.
Right there with you Adam. I’m a former colleague of Kier Starmer and I’m appalled at what is happening in my country. I’m sure that half, if not all the Bills currently being rushed through, will be marketed as laws to keep us safe and joyous, whereas in reality, they will be tools used to control, silence and imprison us. It has worked. People are different. Everywhere I go, people are talking in hushed tones; all I hear is ‘You can’t say that!’, and children are being silenced. If you ‘slur’ someone, it’s seen as a criminal offence. We must bounce back!
