Around 500 people gathered today outside the Bell Hotel in Epping, in a passionate and peaceful protest, sparked by growing fears over community safety. The tipping point came after reports that a migrant housed in the hotel was arrested this week on three counts of sexual assault, including incidents involving local schoolgirls.
It wasn’t a political protest, it wasn’t driven by party lines, racism or hate, this was mums and dads, grandparents, teenagers, and young children, the very fabric of Epping’s community, all standing shoulder to shoulder to demand answers and protection for their kids.
Chants of “Protect our kids” echoed through the streets, car horns honked in solidarity as people lined the pavement. The mood was one of unity, but the underlying emotion was fear – fear of what is happening to the town they’ve lived in for years, fear for the town that is home to so many of their children.
At the centre of the issue, is the Bell Hotel, which has been converted into accommodation for male asylum seekers. Locals say there was no consultation, no warning, and crucially, no proper safeguarding assessment before housing dozens of unknown, unvetted men within walking distance of schools, parks, and family homes.
One furious mother asked, “Who signed off on this?…who thought that placing dozens of adult men, with no background checks, next to a school was a good idea?…who took the risk assessment, or was one ever even done?”
Community members voiced their concerns, not out of hatred, but out of love for their children, their neighbourhood and their right to feel safe. There is a growing sense of abandonment, with many feeling the government has imposed a dangerous situation on local people, without care or accountability.
However, a small group of about a dozen counter protesters arrived waving placards saying “Refugees Welcome” and “No to Hate.” “No to the far right”… They proceeded to shout abuse at parents, calling them “far right” and even “Nazi scum” … all for simply for showing concern about the safety of their children.
One father told me, “I’ve never protested a day in my life, but I’m here today because I’m scared for my daughters, and to be called far right for that – it’s disgusting.”
WERE THESE PAID AGITATORS?
Despite tensions, no arrests were made, and Essex Police deserve credit for managing what could have been a volatile situation with professionalism and control. Officers kept the protest peaceful, with a strong presence, ensuring tempers didn’t boil over into violence.
But, the message from Epping is now loud and clear, this hotel must be shut down. The local people have had enough and now they’re demanding real answers and immediate action before someone else gets hurt.
The government must stop turning communities like Epping into dumping grounds, they must stop labelling concerned parents as far right and they must start doing what it’s meant to do…protect its own citizens first.
The people of Epping spoke today, they were peaceful, but they were powerful. The question now is, will anyone in power listen?
CLOSE THE BELL HOTEL DOWN
Its only going to get worse! boatloads coming in every day, what the hell are we doing taking in all these young single men? Doesn't anyone in government give a damn for our women and children? These men are not refugees they are an army!
Every last one of them must be deported and not a single one allowed here again.
